Six recycled artworks, created by schoolchildren, are going head-to-head in an online
vote to win the Big Yellow Pages Art Competition 2008 and claim the £1,000 first
prize.

This year’s finalists include a Dalek, a desert island, a dragon, an octopus, a
spacecraft and a Spitfire aeroplane. All of them were created by pupils using old
Yellow Pages directories their schools collected for recycling.

More than 160 entries were received in this competition, which is part of the annual
Yellow Woods Challenge, which is run by Yellow Pages working with the Woodland Trust
and UK local authorities.

The Big Yellow Pages Art Competition invites schools to create artworks using old
Yellow Pages directories and their covers before they are taken away by the local
council for recycling into animal bedding, cardboard, egg boxes, packaging and newsprint.

The winning schools are free to spend their prize money as they please, but most
tend to use it for environmental projects.

And for every pound that Yellow Pages awards in prizes to schools, it donates a
matching pound to the Woodland Trust.

The online public vote is open from 24 November to 5 December. Members of the public
can vote once a day every day for their favourite.
