BBC Children in Need had last night raised £20,991,216 by the end of its seven-hour
telethon. The figure, higher than last year’s total and a record for the appeal,
suggests that the credit crunch and recession have still not had an impact on public
and corporate giving for this high-profile cause at least.

Presented by Terry Wogan, Tess Daly and Fearne Cotton, this year’s campaign theme
was “Do Something Different”.

BBC Radio 2 listeners helped raise £2 million, with one anonymous caller bidding
£100,000 in the Auction Of Things Money Can’t Buy for a guitar master class with
Mark Knopfler.

Last year’s campaign raised £19,089,771 on the night, going on to reach a total
of £37 million. This year’s total therefore is likely to pass that figure.

Since 1990 the appeal has now raised over half a billion pounds.

The next closing date for [applications for funding from BBC Children in Need](http://www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/grants/apply.shtml)
is 15 January 2009. The charity awards grants to organisations working with children
aged 18 and under who have mental, physical or sensory disabilities; behavioural
or psychological disorders; are living in poverty or situations of deprivation;
or suffering through distress, abuse or neglect.
