The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, has recognised six volunteer fundraisers as Everyday
Heroes.

The achievements of Alison Cordwell, Liam Fairhurst, Elizabeth Haycock, Chris Lavender
and Phil Pemble were celebrated at a reception at 10 Downing Street earlier this
week.

Lindsay Boswell, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising said “There are
hundreds of thousands of volunteer fundraisers who collectively raise a huge amount
of money each year. In turn, they make a phenomenal contribution to the work that
many voluntary organisations are able to undertake.”

Thirteen year old Liam Fairhurst of Soham also won the Volunteer Fundraiser of the
year at the recent Institute of Fundraising National Awards. Despite being diagnosed
with cancer in his leg in 2005, Liam has now raised more than £150,000 for CLIC
Sargent.

The other volunteers have raised funds for Springhill Hospice in Lancashire, Marie
Curie Cancer Care, RAF Benevolent Fund, RNLI, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Macmillan
Cancer Support and SPACE.
