Online recycling store Greenmetropolis.com has collected and recycled one million
used books and made a donation for each one to conservation charity the Woodland
Trust.

The website’s success over the past four years coincides with the 2008 National
Year of Reading, which the site supports by encouraging people to read through the
sale of books.

Sue East from the Woodland Trust said: “This scheme is so innovative because it
not only encourages people to recycle books but also raises money for the charity
to plant trees”.

The web site features hundreds of books which users can purchase for £3.75, including
free delivery on all paper backs. Customers have the option to sell the books back
at £3 once they have read them, or alternatively customers can put any books cluttering
up their homes on sale and receive payment once they sell.
