# Malaysian NGO of the year

Interested in how charities in Malaysia raise funds? If so some good examples to
look at are this years winners of the 2008 Malaysian NGO of the Year Award. The 
winners were announced at a gala event here in Kuala Lumpur on Monday night and 
this year’s overall winner is Pink Triangle Foundation (www.pt-malaysia.org). PT
was established by a group of gay men in 1987 after the first cases of AIDS were
diagnosed here in Malaysia. In those early years – as elsewhere in the world – no
one wanted to talk about the virus. Today PT does extensive outreach work amongst
vulnerable groups including drug users and sex workers. Their work is supported 
by the Malaysian Government.

The runners up were the National Kidney Foundation (www.nkf.org.my) a well known
and highly respected NGO – there’s a section of their website on fundraising.

The joint winners of the third place were a Cheshire home(www.cheshire.org.my) and
Befrienders (www.befrienders.org.my) who work with people who are suicidal.

You’ll recognise a lot of similarities with UK fundraising – direct mail, corporate
partnerships, events.

The Awards were announced by YB Dato’ Dr Ng Yen Yen, Minister for Women, Families
and Community Development.

Resource Alliance works with local partners to organise the Awards here as a way
of recognising good practice, creating role models and educating the NGO sector.
We also helped set up a fundraising course at one the universities here. I discovered
at the Awards ceremony that the fundraiser at PT attended the fundraising course
here a couple of years back.
