John Grooms and the Shaftesbury Society are to merge later this year to form the
UK’s largest Christian disability partnership.
Trustees of John Grooms, the John
Grooms Housing Association and the Shaftesbury Society voted unanimously in favour
of the merger of the two charities and a partnership with the housing association.

The new organisation will have a turnover of around £50m and employee over 2,000
staff. It will provide a wide range of services for disabled children and adults
with physical and learning disabilities as well as working with church partners
to build and strengthen communities in areas of urban deprivation.

Chief executive of the Shaftesbury Society Mary Bishop is to be the new ceo of Grooms-
Shaftesbury. She said: Both John Grooms and Shaftesbury already offer high quality
care services and we plan to combine this ‘best practice’ in the new organisation,
which will be committed to continuing to put the interests of all who use our services
at the heard of everything we do.

John Chamberlain, currently fundraising director of John Grooms, will take over
the role as fundraising and communications of the new charity. He said: The combined
financial resources will enable us to invest in developing and implementing a fundraising
strategy that will help secure the current financial sustainability of the organisation
and enable capacity to build for the future.

There are not expected to be any redundancies within the fundraising function.

The new organisation will be based at offices in the City of London from April 2007.
