CHATTIEST STUDENTS GO SILENT FOR CHARITY

01/11/06

Pupils from Polam Hall School in Darlington have continued their commitment to charity
work by raising almost £300 for a national fundraising appeal.

As part of its ongoing fundraising and charity drive, the school recently took part
in the annual Jeans for Genes Day, which raises funds to support children with genetic
disorders.

Pupils of all ages donated £1 each and spent the day in fancy dress or casual jeans,
to raise £200 in support of the cause. Two of the school’s pupils, Sixth Formers
Clare Scott and Lauren Miller, on their own initiative, organised a sponsored silence
raising an additional £90. Clare and Lauren, renowned for lively chatter, found
the challenge of total silence quite daunting, but they succeeded!

National proceeds from the 2006 Jeans for Genes Appeal will be split between ten
UK charities, including Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity and the
Wellchild Children’s Charity, to help fund research into serious and often life-
threatening genetic disorders and provide important laboratory equipment and facilities,
as well as valuable advice and support for families.

Polam Hall Headmistress Marie Green, said: At Polam Hall we place great importance
on encouraging our students to consider the needs of others and to do what they
can to help those less fortunate than themselves. A number of our pupils recently
established a special after school club, InterAct, under the auspices of Darlington
Rotary Club, to help coordinate efforts on behalf of international charities and
ensure that they remain actively involved on behalf of local, national and international
causes. I am very proud of their efforts and of all the pupils and staff who took
part in Jeans for Genes Day.”
