World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) is teaming up with 1,000 doctors’ surgeries across
the UK in a unique scheme to encourage people to recycle their old and empty printer
cartridges. Each recycled cartridge generates a donation of £1 to WCRF. There are
65 million cartridges bought every year in the UK alone, of which only 10 per cent
are recycled. This leaves over 58 million gathering dust around offices or in landfills
where they can take up to 1,000 years to decompose.

The company behind this innovative scheme is Environmental Business Products Ltd(
EBP) – Europe’s foremost recycler and re-manufacturer of inkjet and laser printer
cartridges. The money raised will go towards funding vital research into cancer
prevention.

Michaela Strachan is lending her support to the campaign. The presenter of BBC programmes
such as The Really Wild Show and Countryfile says: Everyone talks about the three
R’s: reduce, re-use, and recycle. Now we can add a fourth R: research. By simply
recycling your old printer cartridges you can help WCRF with their research into‘
DNA’: diet, nutrition and active lifestyle to help prevent cancer. So do it RN:
right now!”

Linda Ellis, Senior Fundraising Manager at WCRF says: This is fundraising for charity
made easy. All we ask if that people look for the Freepost envelope at their local
surgery, pick one up and put their old printer cartridge in the post. EBP will do
the rest. It couldn’t be simpler. It’s both good for the environment and helps fund
innovative scientific research and our extensive education programmes.”

Freepost cartridge recycling envelopes will be distributed in doctor’s surgeries.
Patients can take one while they wait, drop in their old cartridge and pop it in
the post. Alternatively, they can take it into the office or give it family and
friends who are bound to have a few empty cartridges lying around. Larger quantities
of empty cartridges can be collected free of charge; to make arrangements for a
collection, contact 0800 435576.

People can also call Freephone 0800 435576 or e-mail wc**@*********co.uk to be sent
Freepost envelopes.

Notes to editors

World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK)

World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF UK) is a registered charity, number 1000739. Our
mission is to raise awareness that the risk of cancer is reduced by healthy food
and nutrition, physical activity and weight management, and to develop and strengthen
scientific knowledge of the relation of these factors to cancer prevention.

The evidence for this was provided by our first expert report ‘Food, Nutrition and
the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective’, published in 1997. This was a review
of the thousands of leading international research studies that relate to food,
nutrition and cancer prevention and produced a clear set of guidelines for members
of the public to follow. A second report, the WCRF/AICR* ‘Food, Nutrition, Physical
Activity and the Prevention of Cancer: a global perspective’, will be published
in November 2007 and will be the most authoritative of its kind.

Few people realise that 30 to 40 per cent of cancers, including many cases of bowel,
breast and stomach cancer could be prevented if only we thought more about the food
that we eat and included a little more exercise into our daily routines.

WCRF UK is part of the WCRF global network and is a member of WCRF International
which has affiliates in the United States (*American Institute for Cancer Research)
the Netherlands, Hong Kong and France.
