The sector has until the end of September to respond to the Government’s call for
views on its Third Sector Review on social and economic regeneration.
The Government
says this consultation into the Comprehensive Spending Review will form the largest
programme of engagement undertaken with the sector. The aim of the Review is to
define the future role of the third sector in social and economic regeneration within
the context of the long term challenges that our society faces.

Chief secretary to the Treasury Stephen Timms said at a speech earlier in the summer
that the Government had recognised it could not meet the long term challenges facing
the UK by itself, and that citizens, communities and voluntary groups would play
a ‘vital’ role.

Those already involved in public service delivery in the voluntary sector could
be the very people best placed to advise or comment on the future.

The Treasury has put together a comprehensive list of questions on its site under
six themes: cohesive communities and building voice for citizens; partnership working
to deliver a shared agenda; promoting innovation and enterprise; creating a culture
of volunteering and mentoring; future role of the sector in shaping and delivering
public services; and creating a sustainable resource base. It points out that the
questions are just ‘prompts’ and are meant to help focus responses rather than act
as a Q&A system.

The deadline for responses is 30 September and these can be submitted by email or
a written document by post.
