In an effort to promote greater effectiveness in the sector, the Charity Commission
is calling on charities to review regularly how they can deliver a better service
for their users, and to think creatively about how they can best do this.
The Commission’s
new guidance is aimed at small to medium-sized charities and gives an introduction
to the subject for those charities interested in exploring collaborative working.
It sets out what is involved in various types of partnership and merger and includes
examples from charities that have achieved it.

Andrew Hind, Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, said: “Diversity and independence
are important strengths in the charity sector – every charity has its own distinctive
contribution to make to society. Equally however, there are many charities which
could do more for their users by sharing expertise and experience through collaborative
working. In some cases, charities may want to take this through to a merger.

“Today’s guidance will be a valuable tool for those contemplating collaborative
working and will help make sure the common pitfalls and mistakes are avoided.”
