The Home Office has launched a new £5 million flagship programme for volunteering,
mentoring and befriending projects for 2006/7 and 2007/8.
Funding is available for
up to 50 projects to act as exemplars of good practice in recruiting, managing and
retaining volunteers, mentors and befrienders.

One third of the grant awarded is intended for projects to share good practice throughout
the sector, whilst remaining funds are allocated to the maintenance and development
of operations, focusing on raising the level of volunteering activity amongst people
at risk of social exclusion.

Projects invited to participate will include: those currently funded under the Home
Office’s Volunteering Recruitment Fund; projects currently funded under the Mentoring
fund and projects nominated by Government Offices, working in partnership with Volunteering
England and Mentoring and Befriending Foundation, in regions where resources are
most needed to raise the level of volunteering activity amongst people at risk of
social exclusion.

The programme will also include national and regional events and dedicated publications
highlighting the benefits of good practice in volunteering.
