The Royal Mail has launched its First Class People awards, inviting customers to
nominate Royal Mail postmen or women who are “the unsung heroes in their local community.”
Given the Royal Mail’s central role in many charities’ fundraising activities, this
is a chance to say thank you to your local postie.
Unsung heroes among postmen and
women can themselves be nominated for their voluntary fundraising activites, for
dealing with an emergency whilst out delivering or collecting the mail, or simply
for providing a dedicated delivery service day in day out.

Names of customers making nominations will be put into a prize draw to win a £1,000
holiday.

Last year’s overall First Class People Award winners, Tracey Smith and Karen Cowling
won the award for their support during the flooding of Cornish village Boscastle
in August 2004.

Tom Melvin, Royal Mail’s Operations Director, commented on the generosity of Royal
Mail staff citing their payroll giving: “over 41,000 people donated £2.3 million
to charity through payroll giving last year, and supported 232 different charities.
On top of this many people get involved in special fundraising activities and voluntary
work.

“It is these people… that we want to hear about as well as the incredible feats
of bravery our postmen and women perform each year.”

The closing date for nominations is 10 January 2006.
