International Development Secretary Hilary Benn has praised staff at The Phone Room
for their fundraising efforts for victims of the Asian tsunami disaster.
Mr Benn
visited the Oxford-based agency yesterday, where 30 staff have been handling telephone
donations to a number of UK charities. Since the tsunami disaster of 26 December
2004, The Phone Room’s callers have seen over £165,000 pledged for victims of the
tsunami.

The overall response rate has been 21% with around 100 new direct donors per 1,000
people contacted. Many of these gifts have been secured via Paperless Direct Debit
and Credit Card.

After meeting The Phone Room’s fundraising staff Hilary Benn described them as “
committed and highly skilled”.
