**Professor Ian Bruce, the former Director General of the Royal National Institute
of the Blind (RNIB) for 20 years, and current Head of the Centre for Charity Effectiveness
at Cass Business School, has been awarded a CBE.**

At RNIB Professor Bruce was responsible for 3,000 staff and 350,000 volunteers delivering
over 60 different services to blind and partially sighted people in the UK.

During his time, RNIB doubled in size and increased the annual number of people
helped five-fold to over 400,000. RNIB also became a leading lobbyist in in London
and Brussels. It introduced membership, becoming an organisation of disabled people,
requiring more then half its trustees to be blind.

On receiving the award, Professor Bruce said: “Obviously the most important thrill
has been working for the RNIB for 20 years but this is certainly very nice icing
on the cake.”

In 1991 Professor Bruce founded the Centre for Voluntary Sector and Not for Profit
Management (VOLPROF) at Cass where he was appointed a Visiting Professor. Over the
last year he has led the transformation of VOLPROF into the Centre for Charity Effectiveness.
Treble the size of its predecessor, the Centre now has two full time Chairs and
this September will be broadening its masters programme from one MSc to four.

Crucial to this success has been a partnership with the Worshipful Company of Management
Consultants whose members have given financial and pro bono professional support.
