**Beacon, the charitable initiative that aims to raise the profile of philanthropy
in the UK, has reported a very encouraging response to its call for nominations
for the inaugural Beacon Prize, which will be awarded later this year.**

Beacon has received over 750 nominations for philanthropists and givers from across
the UK. The final judging will take place on 30th September.

A number of the UK’s leading charities are represented in the nominations as well
as a whole host of smaller charities and new charitable enterprises. “These nominations
really reflect the diversity of giving in the UK and show us to be a true nation
of philanthropists,” commented chief executive officer, Emily Stonor. “We’ve been
overwhelmed by the response and we would like to thank all of those who have made
nominations. To us, everyone who has been nominated is a winner in their own right.”

David Charters, Chair of Trustees added: “Our youngest nominee is 11 and our oldest
is 103.”

Nominations for the Beacon Prize 2003 are now closed, but nomination forms for the
Beacon Prize 2004 will be available later in 2003.
