Whizz-Kidz have announced the third and final round of their No Limits Millennium
Awards, offering 44 grants to help disabled young people to undertake a new activity
or gain a new experience.
The awards are for young people across the UK aged 12-
18 with a permanent disability affecting their mobility. They are designed to give
them the opportunity to undertake a new activity or experience something for the
first time. This could be learning a new skill, fulfilling an ambition or helping
shape a career after school or college. The project must in some way benefit the
individual and their local community.

Julie Fernandez, the actress who appeared as the wheelchair user BBC TV’s ‘The Office’,
helped national mobility charity Whizz-Kidz to launch the final round of the awards
scheme.

Award projects can be related to sport, design, fashion, music, the Web, journalism,
campaigning, or indeed any activity that fits into one of the three Award categories:
Social and Community Activities; Disability Awareness and Integration; or Active
and Outdoor Pursuits.

Winners in Round 2 of the scheme are currently undertaking a diverse range of projects
including creating a sensory garden for wheelchair users, writing a fiction book
featuring disabled characters and starting a football team for disabled young people.

Successful applicants will be given a mentor and receive support, training and a
financial grant to run their project. The average grant to date has been £4,200.
In addition, Whizz-Kidz has a dedicated team who will be on hand to give applicants
help to realise their chosen project.

The Awards are part of a £200 million programme of schemes made possible by the
Millennium Commission and funded by the National Lottery

Julie said: “I am delighted to be supporting Whizz-Kidz in its search for Millennium
Award winners for the final round of the scheme. Taking part in the scheme provides
an excellent way for young disabled people to demonstrate their abilities and talents
and make a real impact on their local community. Whizz-Kidz will give the applicants
all the help and support they need to turn their bright ideas into action and fulfill
their dreams. So my advice is – if you fit the bill, don’t miss the boat and apply
now!”

The closing date for Round 3 is Tuesday 4 March 2003.
