Barclays PLC’s together IT works initiative is one of the finalists in the Business
in the Community’s Awards for Excellence 2002.

The awards recognise companies that can demonstrate the positive impact of their
business on society through community programmes and business practices. They are
run in association with the Financial Times, sponsored by the Department of Trade
and Industry with assurance by AccountAbility.

Barclays PLC is among only three companies to be a finalist for ‘Realising Ability’

together IT works, a partnership between the Royal National Institute for Deaf People(
RNID) and Barclays, is designed to provide deaf and hard of hearing people with
targeted IT training and employment. According to RNID research, 19% of deaf and
hard of hearing people are unemployed, compared with five per cent of the general
population. Many deaf and hard of hearing people are not developing IT skills as
mainstream training courses do not meet their needs.

To mark the company’s achievements, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) will
formerly present Chris Swales, Senior Community Affairs Manager at Barclays PLC
with the new BIG TICK Mark at an event held at Lancaster House, London on Wednesday
19 June. The Mark can only be used by companies who have reached a measurable standard
of excellence and confirms its position as an ‘Example of Best Practice’ in the
field of corporate responsibility.
