The UK voluntary sector employs 563,000 people, 2% of the national workforce, and
contributes £5.4 billion to GDP, according to new research by the National Council
for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). This makes it larger than the post and telecommunications
sector.

NCVO also claims that the voluntary sector has created 85,000 new jobs in the last
five years. However, this was disputed by public sector union Unison which claimed
that many of the positions had simply transferred from the public to the voluntary
sector.
