E-mail befriending began in 1994, with demand for the service growing enormously
over the last two years. Today, volunteers in 20 of The Samaritans’ 203 branches
are providing emotional support on-line. More than half those who e-mailed The Samaritans
stated they were feeling suicidal at the time.
