The Directory of Social Change has released a report into the success rates of charities’
applications for grants to the National Lottery Charities Board. Success rates for
the two ongoing funding programmes have dropped from over 50% in early 1999 to about
40%.
Success rates in England were 44%, Scotland 38%, Wales 39% and Northern Ireland
28%. Still about 25% of applications are rejected at the first stage because they
are incomplete, are submitted by ineligible organisations, or because the project
is outside the NLCB’s guidelines. Those organisations that pass this stage therefore
enjoy a success rate of greater than 50%.

The Directory of Social Change concluded: “the good news is that most really good
projects from well run organisations seem to be getting their grants.”
