Put on your virtual glad-rags and head off for the first online charity ball. The
organisers “seek to provide the best and most entertaining charity event on the
Net to raise funds in support of a broad range of public charities in the areas
of social services, education, health issues, and arts and humanities.”
You have
to pay $10 to enter the ball, but that sum (minus the credit card processing fee)
is donated to the recipient charities. Once inside you can choose from a range of
entertainments, including an auction and a 360 degree turn on the virtual mansion’s
vast ballroom floor to the sound of your preferred band. Bernard the butler will
welcome you and guide you around.

The Kentucky-based Charityball.com describes itself as “the community chest for
the InterNet”. Recipient charities include the Good Samaritan Foundation, Inc.,
University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital and other participating Children’s Miracle
Network hospitals, Kentucky Education Television and other participating public
television stations, and WUKY and other participating public radio stations.
