Until recently, using sound files on Web sites simply guaranteed to exclude a large
number of Internet users from your resources. However, things have changed and there
are a number of charities using sound very effectively on their sites.

In the US, Cancer Care is offering [recordings](http://www.cancercare.org) of its
Cancer Care Teleconference Program on its Web site. These teleconferences provide
free information on various health care issues to people with cancer, their families,
caregivers and health care professionals in the comfort of their homes or offices.
These recordings are now available as RealAudio “Virtual Teleconferences.”

Is sound being used on fundraising Web sites? It is. NMP Inc, the same company behind
the Cancer Care site, recently produced the CyberTiger campaign for World Wide Fund
for Nature UK. At the new site, visitors can play a special, interactive game to
win a limited edition CyberTiger CD-ROM created by WWF-UK in celebration of 1998’
s Year for the Tiger. As soon as you arrive at the site you receive a warm audio
welcome. Listen out too for the jungle noises and rhythms while you play the game.

Once the game is over, you get a chance to participate in the “Adopt a Tiger” project,
together with news about upcoming competitions and fundraising events. It’s an enjoyable,
educational and appropriately short game. It would be interesting to see if the
fundraising appeal aspect could be enhanced with an audio endorsement or reminder.
