UK charities that provide care services under contract to statutory authorities
appear to be seeing a rapid growth in income.
The Barclays/NGO Finance Charity 100
Index Panel announced in January the results of its annual review of the membership
of the Index. The Index, which systematically charts the income of the top 100 UK
charities, was launched in December 1996. Five new charities will be included in
the Charity 100 Index for 1998 and all five provide significant care services to
health and local authorities.

Calculated quarterly, the Charity 100 Index is the most reliable and frequently
updated indicator with which charities can measure their performance against the
sector as a whole and against indices for other sectors. The current total income
of the 100 charities in the Charity 100 Index is just over £4 billion.
