Hello
I am considering moving to the States (New York preferably)in the next few months and I am currently looking at the various job options.
I am French and don't have work permit for the US yet. I have been working in London for nearly 8 years and I have been in Fundraising for nearly 5 years. I was wandering if anyone would have any tips on where to look for fundraising vacancies in the States and how easy it is to find a job.
I have been quite lucky in London and I've worked for some of the major UK charities. Would this be recognised in the New York?
Do you need a work permit before starting looking for a job or do they sponsor the right candidates?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks
Sabine

Work in the USA
Hi Sabine
Howard's on the right track with his recommendations, and I'd also check out the listings at the Chronicle of Philanthropy's website, at philanthropy.com. It's the best site for US fundraising job opportunities.
You're better off securing some interviews or phone conversations before you go so you can find out early if a potential employer will sponsor your work permit. It's not a good idea to just turn up to look for work; if the immigration people at the airport believe you're there to work you could be viewed very suspiciously, and possibly denied entry. If you're a non-European trying to work in the UK, as I am, there are similar hoops to jump through to get a work permit!
Good luck.

I'm sure fundraising experience will count in your favour in the US, particularly so if the nonprofit you end up working for has any fundraising programme or donors in the UK or Europe.
Still, the leading qualification for fundraisers in the US and Canada is the Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) - details at
www.cfre.org
In the UK the Association of Fundraising Consultants is the lead body offering the qualification:
www.afc.org.uk/cfre.php
There are plenty of online jobs boards for fundraisers in the US. Try:
www.charityvillage.com/applicant/jobs.asp
http://jobs.afpnet.org
www.dotorgjobs.com
See if any of the fundraising recruitment specialists in the UK have good contacts or knowledge of the US market - I'm sure some of them do.
Try
www.chapel-york.com
too as they have long experience of the US nonprofit sector. Contact David Wickert.
