Global Awards for Fundraising announced at IFC 2013

Charities and individuals from Germany, Spain, Ireland, South Africa and the Philippines have been named as the world’s best fundraisers at the Global Awards for Fundraising. The winners were announced at the International Fundraising Congress in Holland, run every year by the Resource Alliance.
The Global Awards for Fundraising aim to recognise the best of the best in fundraising. Each entrant will already have won a fundraising award at national level.

Big Idea, Small Budget: winner – CRIS Cancer (Spain)

This category recognises small and medium organisations which have introduced a successful new fundraising idea or stream of revenue on a small budget in the past 12-24 months.
The award went to Spain’s first and only nonprofit dedicated to cancer research for their classical music concert and fundraiser in Madrid, which matched bars of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with seats sold for charity. For each unsold seat one bar of music would not be played. The event sold out.

Innovative Fundraising Campaign: winner – Städel Museum (Germany)

This category recognises organisations for a fundraising campaign that demonstates innovation together with the opportunity for replication within the last 12-24 months.

The award went to Städel Museum’s campaign to help build their new Frankfurt museum. The campaign was praised for its individualised approach that allowed schools, neighbourhood pubs, football clubs and more to take part, all promoted with a popular visual icon: a yellow builder’s boot.
Shortlisted: Peter Mac for Integrated Donor Development Strategy (Australia); St. John for St John is a charity (New Zealand)

Global Fundraiser: Winner – Louise Driver, Children’s Hospital Trust (South Africa)

This category recognises an individual with five years’ fundraising experience who demonstrates fundraising success over a sustained period of two years or more.
The award went to Lousie Driver, chief executive of the Children’s Hospital Trust, for her hands-on and dynamic fundraising approach. Her recent successes include forging a child healthcare partnership between the provincial and Western Cape Government, and raising R58.7million of project funding in 2011 and R41.7million in 2012 for paediatric healthcare projects.

Outstanding Volunteer: winner – Alexandra Eduque, Habitat for Humanity (Philippines)

This category recognises an individual volunteer whose work has made significant impact on the fundraising success of an organisation.
Winner Alexandra Madrigal Eduque helped galvanise the Habitat for Humanity Youth Council (HYC) to fundraise and raise awareness of the issue of sub-standard housing and how this affects young people. She recruited youth campus leaders to community development projects and raised P2 million to develop an early childhood alternative learning program for Habitat communities.
Alexandra Eduque also won the IFC choice award, as voted for by guests at the event.
Shortlisted: Aurelio Luglio, Italian Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Society (AIL), Bologna Chapter (Italy); Jeff ‘Joffa’ Corfe, Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria (Australia).

Sharing the finalists’ lessons

The winners of each category were presented with a trophy and certificate.
Details of the activities and achievements of all shortlisted candidates have been published in a casebook which is distributed to the 1,000 guests at the ceremony, and publicised through the Resource Alliance website.
Neelam Makhijani, chief executive of the Resource Alliance, congratulated the winners and those shortlisted.

Our awards celebrate the best of the best in the fundraising world and provide a global platform to share innovation and new ideas.”
