Incentives for volunteers – discuss

Howard Lake | 3 November 2008 | Blogs

What’s wrong with offering an incentive anyway? That’s the subject of a debate at Volunteering England’s AGM on 24 November at the Mermaid Conference and Events Centre, Blackfriars, London.
Should volunteers be offered incentives? Or does that contradict the concept of ‘voluntary’ support?
Or does it not matter? It looks like the word ‘volunteer’ is on the way out, with young people more likely to react favourably to the idea of “doing favours“.
The issue has come to the fore with the recent rock concerts by ‘pro-social music production company’ Orange RockCorps, which offered tickets to concerts in return for volunteering.
The debate will feature Stephen Greene, Chief Executive of Orange RockCorps, and Sean Cobley, a Director of the Association of Volunteer Managers.
Time: 2.45p.m. for the Debate; 4.15- 5.30 p.m. drinks reception
