The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), the co-ordinating body for leading UK overseas aid charities, has launched a disaster appeal following the impact of Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar (Burma).
The DEC reports that so far there are more than 22,000 people confirmed dead and more than 40,000 missing, but the figures are expected to rise considerably.
The DEC will broadcast a national appeal on TV tomorrow.
DEC member charities World Vision, the Red Cross and Save the Children are among the charities who have a long term presence in Myanmar and their teams have responded since the cyclone struck on Saturday. They are already distributing clean drinking water, hygiene kits and emergency relief supplies and aim to scale this up in the days to come.
